Freshman 15 say what! Better yet, I recently read an article that said freshman 15 has turned into freshman 30!

But have no fear because there are ways to avoid that ever happening. Can I get a Whoop-Whoop!

Eating on Campus:

Breakfast….Don’t skip it, EVER! This meal sets the tone for your whole day.

-Skip the donuts and sugary cereals in the cafeteria and choose fruit. Bananas and fruit cups are easy to grab and go.

-Choose: Oatmeal, it’s a great option that is quick and keeps you full through morning classes. (I had a microwave in my dorm room so I could throw some instant oatmeal in and be out the door quickly for class.)

-Oatmeal comes in so many great flavors. My favorites are Apple Cinnamon and Maple & Brown Sugar. They even make chocolate flavored oatmeal!

Lunch & Dinner:

Many colleges are incorporating healthy options in the dining hall, which makes things so much easier! Always scope out all your options before getting in line. I frequently ate from the “Plan-it Healthy” station!


  • Don’t be afraid to be specific with your food!

-Grilled chicken sandwich? Most come on white buns…ask to have it with toasted wheat bread instead, and not buttered! It’s your body, not the cooks.

-Wraps? Ask for a whole-wheat wrap instead of white. To save calories choose hummus as your condiment rather than Ranch or Honey Mustard. Load it up with lots of veggies and a lean protein. Choose fruit as your side rather than grabbing chips from the hundreds of chips on display near the check out line….darn check out line!

  • Say No:

-To the Fast-Food section in the dining hall!


-Stay away from the greasy pizza….pizza is offered everyday, ahhh! A slice here and there is great but eating it for dinner every night, like MANY do, will only leave you feeling heavy with less energy.

-Say “no thank you” to chicken finger Wednesday (or what ever the most popular unhealthy meal of the weak is on your campus 😉

Look Up The Menu On The School Website To Know What’s offered!!

Here’s an example of the menu my school offered online. I was able to go in the cafeteria knowing exactly what to get instead of giving in to the grilled cheese sandwich and Cowboy Cookies.

Living off campus?       Pack your own lunch ahead of time!!

Being stuck on campus with several classes leaves you with no time to drive home to make lunch….so think ahead and take a HEALTHY lunch with you! You won’t have to worry about scoping out healthy options in the cafeteria. It’s important to not go hungry and skip over a meal…this will cause your body to go into “starvation mode” and ultimately will lower your metabolism.
