Spaghetti and Wall Sits

Happy Monday!

Today has been really yucky outside. The weather has been quite dreary here in Columbia with it being cold and rainy. Since I woke up early before class I decided to take a trip to Starbucks to get a warm drink to sip on. Nonfat Chai Teas = happiness in a cup.

When I walked up to the counter to order my drink the Starbucks guy said, “Hey Michelle, how’s it goin’!”. The Starbucks guy has my name memorized! I was a little shocked because I haven’t been going to this Starbucks as often as others but it made me feel so special! I love how the people at Starbucks work hard to get to know their customers! I need to learn their names now!

Now let’s talk about this past weekend.

My friend Michelle, who works at the gym (and shares my name), and I decided to cook in Friday night before going out with some friends. We decided to cook spaghetti because I stocked up on pasta when it was on sale a few weeks ago.

We threw together a side salad to go along with our meal. It’s always fun to cook with friends and making spaghetti is so easy!

We also got creative with some new workout moves.

Michelle and I love trying out new exercise moves and ways to challenge ourself, so we decided to try Jillian Michaels “standing on your knees wall sit” move. Remember when I attempted to do Sean T’s Wide Tuck Jump?

So here is Jillian…..

And here I am….

I look so happy in this photo. It definitely made holding this position a lot harder!

Now I’m off to class and then to the gym! Having the Workout Log has been really motivating!

Keeping A Workout Log

I am always trying to find new ways to stay motivated to exercise several times a week. Staying active is really important to me so I have decided to start a daily workout log. Many blogs that I follow do this and I always find it motivating to see what others are doing to exercise and how many times a week they workout.

Right now I am teaching 3 to 4 exercise classes a week. 30/20/10 (A cardio class that incorporates sculpting and core work) and Body Pump. My goal is to work on getting in more exercise during the week on the days I don’t teach classes.

Recently I have been running outside on those days because it’s nice to do something different than always being inside at the gym. The weather has been amazing with the temperature cooling off so evening runs have been really enjoyable.

You can check out my workout log under the Fitness section. I hope keeping track everyday will motivate me to exercise more…. instead of jumping on the couch and watching the food network 😉

2 Hour Workout

Tonight I worked a double shift at the gym and taught an hour long Body Pump class and an hour long 30/20/10 class with another instructor. The 30/20/10 class consists of 30 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of sculpting, and 10 minutes of core work.

Man oh man am I SORE! The first thing I did when I got home was make myself a protein drink. I needed something to help my muscles recover after all that weight lifting. I kept it really simple and mixed vanilla whey protein powder and water. It definitely wasn’t as tasty as the Peanut Butter Protein Shake I made a few weeks ago!

As I sipped on my protein drink I searched through my pantry in hopes to find something easy to put together for dinner. You know me, always looking for convenience!

I found a Healthy Choice chicken with rice soup. I got excited when I saw it had 6g of protein..the more the better!

I like this soup because it tastes good, fills me up so I don’t snack later, and is only 90 calories per serving. The only thing I don’t like as much is the amount of sodium in most soups. I am always trying to find soups with really low sodium.

With this kind of soup, I like to have some kind of crunch. In a lot of restaurants, soup comes with croutons on top…yummy. Instead of croutons I crumbled up a few Wheat Thins on top. It gave me that crunch I was looking for and was also low in calories.

I am definitely worn out and will probably be going to bed early tonight!

  • Questions: What is your favorite soup? Do you know of a good low sodium soup I should try?

“Dread”Mill

Oh how I love the Treadmill!…Said NO ONE EVER.

Today I made a commitment to myself to run on the treadmill without stopping to walk. I used to be a pretty good runner, but once I took a break from running regularly I kind of lost my stride.

So today I was “dreading” the treadmill. AKA. DreadMill. Ok anyways….

Everything’s going strong, i’m watching tons of students running around the track…scoping out the cute guys…thinking to myself I may never stop I am so good…

Not so good. half way through I started thinking…ok maybe I need to stop and walk. I considered it until kelly Clarkson’s What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger song came on my iPod. So I thought to myself…Self are you going to die if you keep going? No I am not….

I also love these new snazzy screens on the treadmills….I always try and get the little man on the screen around one more time!

I stayed strong and finished the full workout. I was also happy because I feel more prepared for the 2 Color Runs coming up!

I didn’t feel like cooking anything after my “this won’t kill me” experience at the gym so I stopped by Subway for a healthy sandwich. (Ever sense last year, the guys at Subway know my name and my sandwich…I went way to much)

(Clearly I was really hungry and couldn’t help but take a bite before snapping a picture)

I got my sub with : Whole wheat bread, Chicken breast, lettuce, tomato, onions, black olives and mustard as my dressing. Cheese and a lot of the sauces have a lot of extra calories. I used the panini press at home to heat it….yummy!

I had cherries for dessert. Bring on the benefits!!!

  • They help with arthritis
  • Improves heart health
  • Boosts memory (MUST REMEMBER WHEN STUDYING!)
  • Aids in sleep (Once again, GREAT snack before bed)
  • Anti-inflammatory properties

How do you fight through a tough run or exercise when you feel like stopping?

Staying Motivated

Staying motivated and focused on eating right and staying active can be difficult. I have heard so many people say they can’t find ways to stay on track, so I thought I would share a few ways I am staying motivated right now.

To stay focused this Fall semester I have decided to sign up for 2 5K runs…..but not just any run. I signed up for the craziest run on Earth!

I checked online about..well everyday…for when registrations opened.

The Color Run visits all different cities in America and you have to sign up quick before it gets booked up.

I jumped up and down and did a little happy dance when I found out I got in and get to be part of the run!

-The first Color Run is in October, I am doing that run with my friends here at the University! We are in the process of coming up with a team name.

-The 2nd Color Run is in November which I will be doing with my dad in Charlotte. How great is my dad for doing this with me!

Try and find something that will keep you excited and focused so you can reach your goal!

After walking past the rock wall in my gym so many times I have decided I have to attempt to climb it before I graduate.

This wall is HUGE…and right smack dab in the middle of the gym (Aka. where everyone in the entire gym can stare at you attempting to get up this thing)

Obviously I am scared to try this…ahhh.

Climbing this wall would be a whole different way to challenge my body and muscles.

I am focused to stay on track so that I can reach my goal and climb this INTIMIDATING rock wall!

What ways do you stay motivated and focused to keep eating right and exercising?

Weekend Recap

Saturday morning started out fantastic with an hour long cardio class. It was my first time teaching a weekend exercise class  and I was surprised by how much fun I had. The participants were energetic and made the workout so enjoyable.

After the class was over Ali and I decided to kill some time before Body Pump practice. Ali is also an instructor at the gym and probably the best Zumba instructor ever. We started talking about how difficult the Insanity workout is and some of the crazy moves there are. So of course we attempted to try them…

Ok so here is the famous Shaun T doing the Wide Tuck Jump….and me trying to look like Shaun T doing the Wide Tuck Jump…

I have come to the conclusion that I can not look cool, like Shaun T, while doing this move…

Saturday mornings breakfast was some what of an experiment. Blueberry Maple oats sounded yummy!

I made overnight oats the night before hoping to love this new and popular oatmeal concoction….unfortunately I couldn’t get over the texture and couldn’t eat it. No need to bother you with the recipe.

Dinner was a success though! So many yummy recipes from TheFreshMarket.com

PECAN-CRUSTED BONELESS CHICKEN BREASTS (I haven’t quite mastered making my food look “pretty”, but it tastes great!)

You can find the recipe under Dinner in the Food Fun section 🙂

It turned out pretty good…my pecans weren’t “finely chopped” so it came out a little different. I cooked 3 large chicken breasts, cut them into smaller pieces, and now I have dinner for the next few days. I froze the rest of the chicken for later.

I had a lot of fun seeing my friends last night, but now I have to get ready for classes this week…bring on the text books!

I also think teaching tonights cardio class is going to be a great way to start the week!

Classes Have Started!

Yesterday was the first day of classes and also different compared to previous semesters.

After having been in a sorority for the past two years I have decided to focus more on my major, broadcast journalism, and not be in the sorority this year.  It was a difficult decision and has been a new experience. Walking around campus I saw all the girls in their “rush” t-shirts, it’s a very exciting time for Greek life right now. I’m lucky to have formed so many friendships though in those first two years and thankfully still have all my close friends. A few of them are even in some of my classes!

So many people everywhere! Thank goodness I left the house early because the Starbucks line took 20 minutes….I know…CRAZY.

I wish I could have taken a picture of my Sociology teacher for you. She was very entertaining and loved talking about reality TV…Right up my alley!

After my 3 back to back classes I headed home to make myself lunch.

I made a half toasted sandwich with: ham, tomato, avocado, swiss cheese and lettuce. With a banana on the side. After lunch I began to prepare for teaching my first cardio class of the semester, YAY!

Having a 7pm exercise class is not ideal because lets face it…on Thursday nights, or should I say Thirsty Thursdays, most college students are focused on getting ready for the night of drinking.

I knew this going into the class, and reminded myself that it doesn’t matter how many people are there, it is my responsibility to give each individual the best workout they deserve. I was proud to instruct the few people that did show up because I knew they were dedicated to staying healthy and active, and they were fun to teach!

Now heading to the grocery store to figure out what to cook for dinner. If I make something good I’ll let you know 😉
